There are many face swapping selfie apps on the Apple App Store and Google Play Store but the best one is the MSQRD app. Developed by Masquerade Technologies, their MSQRD app (pronounced as Masquerade) for iPhone and Android has taken the people by storm with its face swapping selfie features. Users can swap their faces for a monkey, Harry Potter, Iron Man and a very big collection of characters. This guide is to show you how to download and use MSQRD app on iPhone and Android.

Since the MSQRD app was first released for iPhone and iPad, it has gathered much attention and Facebook recently bought the company in March 2016. It was also recently added to the Google Play Store for Android devices, but it is still in the beta stage so many features which are on the iOS version are currently not available on Android.

Features

MSQRD app (pronounced as Masquerade) is a selfie app designed to swap the face of the user with a 3D filter of a character, animal or celebrity. In the MSQRD app you can

  • Swap your own face through the front facing camera and your friend’s face through the rear facing camera.
  • Select different filters to swap your face and you can also download more filters (currently only on iOS).
  • All filters are 3D mapped on your face meaning you can make a facial expression on the filter by doing the facial expression yourself.
  • Some of the filters include an Iron Man filter which puts the Iron Man helmet on your head which you can open or close by moving your head, there are also filters where you can swap a tiger, monkey or a snow bear face or you can swap your face for a famous celebrity like Leonardo Di Caprio.
  • Take a selfie or make a video with the face swap filter you have selected.
  • You can also submit the face swap filters you have made yourself.

How to Download and Use MSQRD app

For iPhone/iPad Users

MSQRD app is supported on iOS 8.4 or above so make sure your iPhone or iPad is updated to the latest iOS by going to Settings > General > About > Version. To download and use MSQRD app on iPhone, follow these steps:

  1. Open App Store on your iPhone or iPad and type “MSQRD” on the search bar (search page on iPhone) and tap on “Search”. Alternatively, click on the link and it will take you to the iTunes App Store.
  2. Tap “Install” on the one named “MSQRD” in the search results to install the app. Enter your Apple ID credentials if the App Store asks.
  3. MSQRD app will appear on the home screen of your iPhone or iPad once it is installed. Tap it to launch the app.
  4. Grant access to the camera, microphone and photo gallery of your iOS device if MSQRD app asks for it.
  5. Once MSQRD app opens, you will see the viewfinder of the front facing camera, a row of filters and buttons to take a picture or a video below the viewfinder.
  6. Make sure your face is in the view finder so that the app completely swaps your face with the selected filter.
  7. Tap on the video icon to make a video or the photo icon to take a picture of the select filter.
  8. Dozens of filters are available in the row below the viewfinder and more are available to download.
  9. To change a face filter, just select one from the row.
  10. By default, the app will open the front camera but you can select the rear camera by tapping on the arrows icon on the top-right of the app.
  11. To add more filters to the app, swipe the left side of the app to open a menu where you can navigate to the Masks store.

For Android Users

MSQRD app is supported on Android 4.3 or above so make sure your Android device supports MSQRD app by going to Settings > About Phone > Android Version. To download and use MSQRD app on Android, follow these steps:

  1. Open Play Store on your Android device and type “MSQRD” on the search bar and tap on “Search” icon on the keyboard. Alternatively, click on this link and it will take you straight to MSQRD app in Google Play Store
  2. Tap on the one named “MSQRD” in the search results and tap on “Install” to install the app.
  3. MSQRD app will appear in the app drawer of your Android device once it is installed. Tap it to launch the app.
  4. Grant access to the camera, microphone and photo gallery of your Android device if MSQRD asks for it (only on Android 6.0 or above).
  5. Currently, the Android version of MSQRD app is in beta development stage, so many features in the iOS app are not yet included so you can only do the things mentioned in steps 6 to 12.
  6. Tap on the “MSQRD” icon to launch it.
  7. Once the MSQRD app opens, you will see the viewfinder of the front facing camera, a row of filters and buttons to take a picture or a video below the viewfinder.
  8. Make sure your face is in the view finder so that the app completely swaps your face with the selected filter.
  9. Tap on the video icon to make a video or the photo icon to take a picture of the select filter.
  10. Only a few filters come with the app but more will be available to download once the full version of the app is released.
