Design, Specifications and Features
Project Morpheus aims to provide VR entertainment for console gamers but with focus on comfort and addressing much of the concerns of VR sickness as possible, do read our article on VR sickness as well. Project Morpheus VR headset will be easy to wear, and will be very easy to take off by pressing a quick release button which will loosen the frame a little so that the headset is taken off smoothly. This design allows the user to put on the headset quickly and jumping in to game without waiting for much long.
Project Morpheus follows the design language of the PlayStation Move controllers, DualShock 4 controllers and the PlayStation 4 itself with black and white colors. The futuristic design looks nice but facilitates in tracking movement as well. The PlayStation Camera tracks movement of the headset through RGB LED lights which are at the front of the VR headset, just like how the Move controllers are tracked. The Project Morpheus VR headset looks very futuristic and in term of design, it may be lighter and more ergonomic than the Oculus Rift or HTC Vive.
The Project Morpheus VR headset will feature a single 5.7-inch 1080p display with a refresh rate of 90Hz to 120Hz, which will divide the video into two 960×1080 resolution screens on the same display for each eye. Players can control games through the DualShock 4 controller or the Move controllers which are also tracked by the PlayStation Camera.
Project Morpheus Connectivity
Project Morpheus will more or less likely be connected with the PlayStation 4 through an HDMI cable. There will be a processing box similar to the HTC Vive processing box which will connect the PlayStation 4, Project Morpheus and your TV. The benefit of connecting with the TV is that of you are playing a local multiplayer game, the other person you are playing with if he/she does not have the VR headset can look at the TV while playing.
Sony has confirmed that their Project Morpheus will be able to work with any existing PlayStation 4 console and you won’t have to wait for any new console which would work with this VR headset.
Release, Pricing and Availability
Sony has confirmed release of the Project Morpheus VR headset around Q4 2016. The Project Morpheus VR headset will be available in North America, Europe, Japan, China and Australia at launch.
